Thank You & 2020 Anticipation

As we make our way into 2020 I want to take a few moments to say a heartfelt  THANK YOU to everyone who made this past year’s Facing Ourselves events and exhibitions in Carpinteria so incredibly satisfying, successful, and sweet.

Since we began in 2016 dozens of people around the world from all walks of life have helped us realize this dream: private donors and businesses, volunteers, foundations and community organizations; and the extraordinary people who courageously agreed to have their portraits taken and publicly displayed. We are all coming together to create this work and conversation about how to create a compassionate community. We could not have come this far without you!

Many months of labor and inspiration in 2019 culminated with a series of exhibitions and events that touched people far and wide. Some of the “ripple effect” of the work here in Carpinteria included: our interaction with and support from: teens from Rincon High School (Teen Mentorship Program/ Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center), students from Crane Day School, Seniors from Gran Vida Senior Living, City officials and crews, Poets Laureate and their students; Story-cloth creators; and Yoga and Feldenkreis teachers and students.

Special thanks to the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center and the City of Carpinteria for hosting gallery and streetscape exhibitions that generated such an enthusiastic and deeply-felt response. We were very proud to be featured in the Coastal View NewsSanta Barbara IndependentKCRW and The Creative Community.

LOOKING FORWARD IN 2020

We are excited to begin the process of taking the Facing Ourselves Project into other communities this year to feature folks who seek to create a more tolerant and open world for the future.

Our first stop will be this spring in Oswego, a tiny agricultural town in Kansas. We are currently in conversation with Body Studio in London to bring the portraits and Facing Ourselves momentum to London’s Shoreditch community this summer. Stay tuned!
